Several excellent presentations in different sections on the most important congress in interventional cardiology - the TCT congress - taking place in the Moscone center, San Francisco:
Prof.Zeller (Heart Center Bad Krozingen, Germany) presented for the first time data about the randomized, controlled, multi-centre trial Yukon-BTK, comparing the microporous polymer-free Rapamycin-coated Yukon DES with its uncoated version in Below-the-knee lesions. The 177-patients trial showed significant differences in the two groups after 6-month follow-up. The final data of this trial are expected for publication in the first quarter of 2010. (see download section peripheral coatings)
Several other publication are discussing now the clinical benefit of the polymer-free Translumina Stent Coating Technology as not only an alternative to current polymer-based DES, but to be the future direction of the interventional cardiology. Treating patients with a drug for a defined time and then leaving a bare metal stent surface behind without additional other problematic substances (polymers) seems to have a great safety advantage by reducing restenosis without additional late stent thrombosis risk.
